Fun fact: anytime you hear a story that boils down to “and then some ABSOLUTE FOOL sued this totally innocent megacorporation for assloads of money AND WON! Can you believe it? Ridiculous. Some people, right?” 99 times out of 100, the corporation super fucked up, the plaintiff 100% deserved that money,.and you’ve just been fed corporate propaganda.

hazeldomain

“Hot Coffee Lady” had to get skin grafts and was at least the 11th customer to be hospitalized. The coffee served to her was in violation of a court order requiring McDonald’s to sell their coffee at a safe temperature.

The “warning: contents hot” label is a passive-aggressive move by McDonalds because they implemented it at the same time that they finally complied with legal requirements to serve safe beverages.

Every time you see “warning contents hot” and roll your eyes because of course it’s hot, you’re assuming that you and McDonald’s agree on the definition of “hot.”

What’s more, you assume you’ve always agreed, which is the baseline for assuming that the lady who sued had unrealistic expectations.

fierceawakening

Yeah. I don’t remember the corporate policy for McDonalds coffee temperature at the time, but i do remember that it was *near boiling.*

Your Starbucks? Not near boiling. Not likely to make you need massive reconstructive surgery on your hoo hah if you spill it in your lap.

mythsandpolitics

Also, please remember exactly how much BS someone would have to go through to get that verdict. Generally speaking, someone has been seriously injured or killed. They have to prove that the company was negligent or knowingly refused to fix an issue. This isn’t like airing something on Fox News - there are actual standards of proof that have to be met. Even so, most consumer lawsuits against corporations do not achieve large awards. When they do, consider how severe the damage must have been. The MCD lady only wanted them to pay her damn medical bills (think about how much medical care costs in the U.S.); McDonalds refused. Toyota eventually had to pay a massive settlement (after being sued multiple times) for issues with the gas pedal causing sudden massive acceleration. Do you honestly believe they would have just fixed it on their own? Toyota lied to regulators and blamed it on “driver error” - because sometimes you just hit the gas really hard when you meant to hit the brake… (see https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/toyota-reaches-12-billion-settlement-to-end-criminal-probe/2014/03/19/5738a3c4-af69-11e3-9627-c65021d6d572_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ab92a7e6b655)

Don’t let them fool you into thinking that people are getting hurt by a company’s product just because they’re stupid.

fandomsandfeminism

Corporations have no qualms about lying and defaming people they have hurt to avoid being held accountable.

kalinara

Think about how much money McDonalds (and other corporations) have.  Think of how easily they can pay for anything to go away.  Think about the teams of high powered lawyers they can pay.

If a regular joe manages to take them to court and actually WIN?  There’s a fucking reason for that.

so my brother was telling me about this human resources certification he attended a while ago. in a panel, the panelist asked a bunch of people in attendance, “who here knows if an applicant for a job is right for it in under 60 seconds?”

hands shot up around the room, people smug about their ability to “weed out the riff-raff” when it came to hiring for their fortune 500.

“you should all be fired and probably in jail,” they said, waiting for the whole room to get uncomfortable, then continued, “because the only things you can really learn about a human being in under 60 seconds are all things that are fueled by prejudices and biases covered by american law. so now, i will teach you how to stop being racist, sexist, judgmental assholes and hire people that will better your company of employ.”

sourcedumal

I need this to be force taught at all companies

antifainternational

This is a good example of why study after study after study has shown that discrimination against racialized people looking for work is very real.  Oh, and don’t get too smug if you’re not in the USA - similar studies have shown that the same shit happens in Canada, Germany, the UK,
Sweden
  - basically in every country you can think of.

not to #resist fun but an app like snapchat which digitally “enhances” the photos you take of yourself inevitably leads to greater dissatisfaction w your actual face in the same way that photoshopped images in media increase body dissatisfaction, but actually worse than that bc it’s an unrealistically enhanced version of you and therefore harder to dismiss or ignore

wildplantts

A lot of plastic surgeons are saying that more and more people are walking in with Snapchat filter photos of themselves as reference to how they want to look. We really need to be aware of how much harm these filters do to our self image.

AND LETS TALK ABOUT THE WHITEWASHING TOO: lightening of the skin, changing the eye color to blue, contouring the face/nose. it’s not just wrong because of beauty standards, it’s also really fucking racist 🙃

I hate shipwrecks in Minecraft bc they imply that there is/was some form of intelligent life in Minecraft before the player…… It’s clearly not villagers bc they can’t even build a village properly…… Who are these mysterious ship builders and where did they go…..

actually the more i think ab it the more beautiful and lonely the world gets. i developed this interpretation after mineshafts where added but even before that, the temples buried by sand?  trapped caverns in jungles? even in other worlds, fortresses in hell itself now only guarded by skeletons? houses in the end only accessible by portal after defeating the dragon? all relics of a past race thats been mysteriously wiped. the villagers dont know perhaps, they see you and assume your one of them. different perhaps, your nose is much to short and face much to squished, your language garbled complexities they have yet to decode, but thats fine to them. you have things they want and they have things you want. perhaps they will one day, long after you get tired of this world, uncover those past relics as well. perhaps they will recognize the stories passed down, perhaps they will lament not trying to understand you, to find the missing pieces of the race before them now entirely gone.

or something like that. im v tired

TIL Mr. Rogers was bullied as a child for being fat. “We’re gonna get you, Fat Freddy!”, the bullies would shout. “I used to cry to myself when I was alone,” Rogers said. “And I would cry through my fingers and make up songs on the piano.”

apparently food inspections stopped bc of the shutdown so things bout to be real fucked up for some of us

“The Food and Drug Administration has stopped routine food safety inspections of seafood, fruits, vegetables and many other foods at high risk of contamination because of the federal government’s shutdown…”

Most companies are probably going to continue their regular food safety procedures, but a few things you can do to reduce some personal risk:

Buy hard, solid veggies and fruits (apples, melons) or ones with rinds (bananas are probably fine). Scrub the peel/rind thoroughly with soap and water before consumption.

The more solid and dense the meat, the less likely it is for contamination to spread very far. Buy your meat in solid cuts, NOT GROUND. Especially not ground chicken rn, salmonella bad.

Cook things thoroughly. Follow guidelines for the internal temperatures meat is supposed to reach and stick to those guidelines. Use a meat thermometer. Make your steaks well done for a while.

I’d stay away from shellfish as a whole if I were you. The diseases you can get from it are some of the nastier ones. No sushi for a while, too. If you have fish, make sure it was frozen following anti-parasitic guidelines and cook thoroughly.

AVOID LEAFY GREENS. This is where we’ve been seeing the most outbreaks lately, so be very careful.

The pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, and the very young are the ones most at risk in an outbreak. If you are in one of these groups, be extremely cautious and avoid soft cheeses and prepackaged deli meats. Check on friends and family in these groups. Report symptoms of foodborne illness to a doctor so they can report to the state health depts that are still running.

Even with these in mind, remember that most outbreaks of foodborne illness are due to things like improper cooking and storage. Stay safe out there, folks 💙
